I'm really glad you brought this up. The push for 21st Century, fly-by-wire technology, trickled down into the single-engine, fixed gear airplane mentality still detracts my ability to fly properly. Avionics companies literally pushed this environment into all of GA with the advent of Garmin equipped this and that. The technology of automated flight was brought upon by GPS. Remember when LORAN, RNAV barely got started and we never got through it entirely. Too much sophistication in lightning-speed time slots adds to the demise of our ability to do just what we are supposed to do, Fly the airplane..I want to know altitude, airspeed, and heading without resorting to a mouse pad.

First, the brothers ALWAYS look unhappy in photos...like they are waiting for the weather to clear.

To you point, flying the SYSTEM is different but no need to discard all of that accrued knowledge in the log book. I believe flying a Technically Advanced Aircraft adds to the appreciation of flight. Doing it well means the pilot already understands what the system will do and monitors it for results. It is that understanding that is the challenge. (and btw, the Cirrus is a dream to fly even without all the toys.)
