From AirVenture 2008 – Five minutes before the blog session began at AirVenture yesterday, I was wondering if the whole thing had been such a good idea. There were five people in the room. Maybe it was too soon to talk social media.
Then, as the clock struck four, people began arriving. Soon the crowd had grown to a few dozen, some from the traditional print media, other bloggers, academics and even a few from the aircraft manufacturing sector all curious about the value of social media for sure.
Then there was the eternal question about the meaning of the acronym BLOG, which one of my cohorts yesterday, Rod Rakic from MyTransponder.com, said stands for “Better Listings On Google. I can live with that.
But this was also a chance for some bloggers to meet in person for the first time.
Mike Collins from AOPA was busy with a pencil and pad from the start and also took the microphone when I offered it to give us his perspective about where blogging fits into the grand communications scheme of the world’s largest aviation membership organization and their publication. This is the beginning of the new world as far as I can tell. A year from now at AirVenture 2009, my guess is that we’re going to have a considerably more in-depth look at social media.
And oh yes … for those folks who couldn’t make it … you know who you are Mary Kirby and Norman Rhodes. You got off easy this year. People were looking for you though so I think you might want to show up next year! Finally, thanks to my co-editor Scott Spangler for shooting the photos.
